Have you been looking for ways to make your application stronger? Enter storytelling! It’s the right way to show your recruiters your capabilities and potential. If you’ve created a great paper resume, now is the time to get the ball rolling and take your application to the next level with a video resume.

Why Should I Use Storytelling in My Video Resume?

Your recruiters are not looking just for bland qualifications and achievements. While those are great milestones, you are the central character that your recruiters are hoping to hire – and storytelling is a great way to put yourself at the centre of the story, and communicate why you are the best candidate to hire!

Build the right story arc and show your recruiters your journey to the job you want!

How to Use Storytelling in Your Video Resume?

There are many storytelling structures that you can follow but here’s one to put the point across to your recruiter.

1.      Introduction

Introduce yourself confidently! “Hi, I’m ….”, is a warm and easy introduction that will keep your recruiters interested. While this works very well, don’t be afraid to show your personality. If a peppier or more formal introduction speaks your truth, go for it! The key is to show confidence and that you are proud of who you are.

2.      Narrating Your Experience

This is the central piece of your video resume. You’ve pulled your recruiter in with a sharp introduction and now it’s time to keep them hooked. Speak about your experiences, but make sure to add elements of the motivation behind your experience, where you learnt from, and what you envision for the future! This creates a holistic picture that your recruiters will find hard to ignore.

You can add anything of substance here – from the year abroad that improved your understanding of diversity to the education workshop that gave new perspective, anything that lets your personality shine through is great!

3.      Keep Them Wanting More with a Call to Action (CTA)

Here’s the end of your storytelling and a strong Call to Action (CTA) will push your recruiters to take the next steps towards hiring you. This can be as simple as, “I’d love to tell you more. Reach out to me and we can discuss my work in detail.” You can even go bold and say, “There’s more to me than this video can show. Reach out to me to know more!”

Make sure to smile when speaking your CTA. Make it your own, stay confident, and have fun!
